AGCO has been the industry standard for producing farm gear and equipment for many years. Robert J. Ratliff, the current Chairman of the Board of Directors of AGCO, has played a pivotal role in the company’s history and development. It took a long time for this guy to get to the top of the massive company he founded. He headed the Chicago-based harvester manufacturer International Harvester Company and had a successful career as a manager at the American tire manufacturer Uniroyal Tire Company. Robert Ratliff, a 30-year veteran of the truck, tire, and agricultural equipment sectors, became president and chief executive officer of Deutz-Allis in 1988 when the West German corporation KHD owned the farm machinery section of Allis-Chalmers. He persuaded AGCO’s upper management, particularly John Shumaid (the company’s president and senior executive director from 1990 until his untimely death in an aircraft accident on January 4, 2002), that it was necessary to acquire the agricultural equipment section.
