SML Isuzu Limited is a producer and distributor of commercial vehicles in Chandigarh, India. It is a partnership between Sumitomo (43,96%), Isuzu (15%), and other stockholders (41,04%). From 1984 to 2011, the listed firm was known as Swaraj Mazda Limited.

In 1983, the firm was established as Swaraj Vehicles Limited. One year later, Punjab Tractor Limited (29%), Mazda (15.6%), and Sumitomo (10%) reached a joint venture and technical collaboration agreement. Concurrently, the company’s name was changed to Swaraj Mazda Limited. Production began in 1986 and was augmented by a self-developed bus in 1987 and a truck in 1990. (Swaraj Mazda Super).

Swaraj Mazda’s share of the light commercial vehicle market was 4.42% in its initial year, 4.67% in 1988, and 6.31% in 1990 (2.6% of the commercial vehicle market). From 1991 through 1995, the rate was once again 4%. In its first two decades, Swaraj Mazda produced 100,000 automobiles. Concurrently, an agreement for technological collaboration was reached with Isuzu.

Punjab Tractors Limited sold its whole ownership in Swaraj Mazda to Sumitomo at the beginning of 2009. Consequently, Mahindra & Mahindra, as the main owner of PTL (which sells tractors under the brand name Swaraj), demanded that Mazda discontinue using the Swaraj brand name. However, in 2011, the rebranding of Swaraj Mazda into SML Isuzu Limited rendered this outdated.

In 2014, SML Isuzu’s market share for light commercial vehicles was 7.5%.

In the 2017 fiscal year, 12,700 vehicles (7,919 buses and 6,990 trucks) were manufactured, whereas 14,909 units were manufactured in 2017. (6,814 buses and 5,886 trucks). Therefore, the capacity for potential manufacturing is 18,000 units.

SML Isuzu sells automobiles to Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka (buses), Ghana, and Tanzania and CKD kits to Bangladesh.

Additionally, Isuzu holds a 12.4% interest in Isuzu Motors India in India.
